Liposuction Recovery

The liposuction techniques available today are so advanced that there is only minimal swelling, trauma and discomfort. So, recovery is relatively fast. However, there is still a recovery period when it is time to rest, take care of yourself, and if you have not, it’s time to adopt healthy eating habits, so that you gain and maintain all the benefits this procedure has to offer.

Everyone heals at a different pace. During the first week after surgery, you will be bruised, sore and swollen. By the third week, the swelling and bruising will have significantly decreased.

You will be sore and uncomfortable for weeks to months. Pain medication is available for short term relief, and over-the- counter pain medicines are capable of managing post-op discomfort.

You can expect to wear a compression garment to minimize swelling and enhance skin contraction for three to six weeks. Those tiny incisions are just about a centimeter long so scars are tiny, but may appear red and raised. As time passes they will become soft, flat and colorless.

Most patients are back at work one week after liposuction, but strenuous physical activity should be avoided for a few weeks. The length of your recovery depends on how many areas were treated. Final results will be visible at 6 months and will continue to improve for up to one year.

At Powell Cosmetic Surgery in San Diego, you will receive complete pre and post-op instructions that should be followed for optimal results. Dr. Powell is always available to answer your questions and address your concerns.
